Day 74 Gros Morne National Park

Thurs., Aug. 1

Visit West Brook Fjord, S S Ethie and Lobster Cove Head

Looking forward to today and the weather is cooperating to take a boat ride in a Fjord.  About 30 km or so north of Rocky Harbour is parking; visitors can walk in along a very nice trail and boardwalk about 3 km long.  At the start of the walk is a sign “Park Fees @ work”.  Once arrived, we paid for our boat trip into the fjord which is about two hours long.  There is a small restaurant, gift shop and deck just to look if you don’t want to do the boat trip.  The Western Brook Pond is a glacier carved fjord with sides 2000 feet high and waterfalls coming down the Long Range Mountains part of the Appalachian chain.  We were told that the caribou climb down one side, swim across and climb up the other side to graze at the top and have their babies.  The seafood chowder was very good.

Next stop the S. S. Ethie which crashed off shore Dec. 11, 1919.  It had 92 passengers on board and all survived including a baby put into a mailbag.  Parts of the ship are still all over the shore.
Onto Rocky Harbour and stop first at Lobster Cove Head lighthouse and national historic site.  Here are trails, viewpoints and exhibits.  Norris Point is another small cute village protected by its inland harbour perfect for kayaking.  Back at the campsite we walked around the Moose Path.
