Day 73 Visit L’Anse Aux Meadows & St. Andrew’s

Wed., July 31

Drive up to L’Anse aux Meadows & St. Andrew’s

Drove into Rocky Harbour to get gas but they were out of diesel.  Driving around and finally got some just north of Cow Head at the golf course.  It was foggy and light rain about half way up the skies cleared so we did get to see Labrador across the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.  Finally we saw moose.  A male and female together.  It was amazing to watch them go thru the trees especially with that rack.  He just moved his head back and forth and through the trees he went.  2 moose in pic.
We stopped at L’Anse aux Meadows and just in time for a guided tour.  This was a Viking village about 1000 years ago.  A replica of the village is there to explore with guides in period costume.  There is also a replica Viking ship on site.
St. Anthony is pretty much at the end of the road of the Northern Peninsula.  We were told there was an ice berg off the coast.  We drove to the light house where we could see the ice berg off the coast.  It is considered a large berg.  We had lunch at Haven Inn just up a block from the Tim Horton’s with a great view of the harbour.  The harbour had a beautiful blue yacht visiting.
In little patches along the road there were fenced in gardens.  Strange places for them but I guess up here you plant where you can.  Almost everyone must heat their houses with wood so there are piles, and I mean piles of wood stacked up in people’s yard or just off the highway with numbers on them.  Since it isn’t lobster fishing season there are stacks of lobster traps all over.
We didn’t get to see the sun set since the clouds came back in as we were heading south.  We drove into Port aux Choix but it was late and closed.  This national historic site is where human bones, tools and weapons were found which are believed to have been used between 2300 – 1200 BC.
Port Saunders
We stopped in Arches Prov. Park on the way.  The waves have eroded the rock to make 3 tunnels.
