Day 68 Travel Grand Falls-Windsor to St. John’s, NL

July 26

Travel Grand Falls-Windsor to St. John’s, NL

Isn’t it funny whenever we are looking for a rest area or gas station, right after we squish in somewhere or stop in a parking lot to have lunch we spot a better place?  Just east of Bishop Falls on the highway there is a Tim’s and truck stop gas station.  I missed a photo opp.  I guess in Newfoundland they will sell anything, a beaver house in the middle of a pond had a For Sale sign on it and marked Sold.  A popular restaurant here is Mary Brown’s Chicken. We never tried it out.

Joey Smallwood’s Lookout brings back memories.  Ross and I were remembering rocky flat ponds and creeks.  This definitely brought back memories.

Going through Terra Nova Nat’l Park we noticed a lot of new growth trees. The trees here are no way as tall as they are in BC.  We decided we would stop for lunch at the Goobies info centre on the highway.  It was packed since next door is an Irving gas station and restaurant.  We were lucky to get fresh coffees.  We arrived at Pippy Park in St John’s by 3:00 pm so quickly got set up so we could head out to Cape Spear.  This is the most easterly point in North America and oldest surviving light house.  It also has cannons that were meant to protect the harbour but never used in war.  Warm temperatures and magnificent views!  Cape Spear is on the out skirts of St John’s, 12 km to the east.

Back to the city to see Signal Hill and the Cabot Tower, a historic site of Canada.  The views of the bays and entrance to St. John’s harbour plus the trails on the grounds shouldn’t be missed.
