Day 70 Tour South/Irish Loop from St. John’s

July 28

Tour South/Irish Loop from St. John’s

Heading out of St. John’s and the roads are blocked in the direction we are heading due to a Cancer run.  Garmin had to keep recalculating until we could finally go her way.  Bay Bulls and Witless Bay are the place to go to book whale watching tours. The road winds in and out of the bays and small towns like Cape Broyle and Ferryland.  The homes all have stock piles of wood!!

Just off the coast of Cappahayden I spotted something in the water.  Luckily there was a view point and other people were already watching as about 4 whales were splashing and jumping out of the water.  Too bad they were so far away.  The land down here is very baron, rocky, ponds scattered and very windy!  In the middle of nowhere there will be a cabin and we’re thinking “Why here.”  A summer retreat??
We stopped at Portugal Cove at Trepassey Bay at the Southern end of the Avalon Peninsula.  We watched a 10 minute video on the area and Mistaken Point where they have discovered fossils believed to once live in a tropical area.  Along this route there are berry pickers, the famous Bakeapple that they sell for about $8 for 1 cup jar of jam.  Pickers get paid $50 for a pail full.
We stopped in Trepassey for lunch.  The only hotel with a restaurant in town.  But a great view.
We ran into fog and drizzle but the scenery was more of the same.  Near St. Vincent’s we drove over a dike/causeway.  Driving north near St. Mary’s we backed up as we spotted a miniature village someone built around a pond.  Very cute.  Back at the campsite after dinner we went for a walk and had to put pants, sock and shoes on!!  First time in weeks wearing lots of clothes!!!
