Day 20 West Yellowstone to Yellowstone National Park

June 8

Day 20  West Yellowstone to Yellowstone National Park

Beautiful morning to head into Yellowstone National Park!  In the park along the Madison River there are a lot of meadows where the bison love to graze, so in the first 20 km we spotted about 100 bison.  Popular river for fly fishing. Whoa, traffic jam!  It’s just an eagle in a tree.  Vehicles on both sides of the road taking pictures.  Another 20 km and a gorgeous elk  What a rack.

It is approximately 100 km from the KOA to Fishing Bridge RV Park.  11 am is checkout and the parking lot was full of RV’s trying to get in.  Good thing we got a reservation the day before.  Marg & John were just ahead of us.  After getting set up and having lunch we enjoyed the sunshine and met our neighbors from Texas, Rebecca and Mark.  After visiting Yellowstone again they were heading to Sioux Falls then up to Winnipeg??  We all laughed!!

We all hopped into our truck and headed East on Hwy 20 to Mary Bay and hiked 3.7 km (2.3 m) round trip to Storm Point.  A great view of Yellowstone Lake!  Near the lake we saw a family of marmots and the one sat nicely for us to get pictures.  A short drive to Steamboat Point which overlooks the lake; stinky and lots of flies, but a nice viewpoint.  Another short drive to Lake Butte Overlook, great view of the lake but surrounded by a past forest fire.  One last quick hike from Pelican Creek, 2 km round trip to lake and back.  Park attendant said this trail was closed due to bears in the area.  We didn’t see any indication of bears in the area.  Back to the campsite for a nice BBQ steak dinner and then relaxing outside without a fire.  No fires allowed!  No cell service!  No WiFi!
