Day 19 West Yellowstone to Yellowstone & back

June 7

West Yellowstone to Yellowstone & back

Yay the internet is working but very slow.  Blog entered but not published since it is time to go.  First stop Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Centre.  Recommended.  Indoor exhibits and outdoor Grizzly bear and wolf habits plus an eagle aviary.  Two hours later we are driving into the park at 22 degrees.  Not far into the park we saw our first Bison.  Picture time, we were very excited.  A little ways down the road we see a few more herds one just across the river with calves, so over 150 altogether. The best one was the one on the road walking towards the truck as Marg was freakin’ out and I was saying “take a picture, take a picture.”

Next stop Artist Paintpots.  Hot bubbling water and bubbling mud pots.  At Norris Geyser Basin the interpretive centre explains how geysers work then we headed to the boardwalk among different geysers with blues, greens and rust colors.  Mother Nature’s Pressure Relieve Valve.  The Sulpher Caldron, sweet smelling!!  At one point there were vehicles all over the road, it was a black bear so we kept going!  You should see some of these cameras and tripods.  We are amazed at how many people are on the road already.  Summer must be crazy here on these roads.  There are a lot of pull outs but probably not enough.

We checked for availability and reserved our next 3 nights at Fishing Bridge RV, the only campsite in the park with full hookups.  On the return trip we stopped at the Mud Volcano.  The bubbling mud is like a thick spaghetti sauce.  Along the boardwalk near one of the bigger bubbling sulphur mud pots a Bison was enjoying a steam bath. Further along the path was a cave with steam roaring out which sounded as though there was a dragon inside called the Black Dragon Caldron.  When this mud volcano originally blew, it blew out trees by their roots.
